MARKETING INTERN - HAWAII OPEN (HONOLULU, HI)

INTERNSHIP OVERVIEW

This three month internship offers the unique opportunity to become involved in every aspect of Marketing and Special Event planning for a large-scale, international professional sporting event.  The internship is designed to provide support to the Marketing department in an effort to maximize awareness of the Hawaii Open.  This position will also provide support to the Assistant Tournament Director in various aspects of the operations in running the tournament.

INTERNSHIP REQUIREMENTS

AVAILABILITY

  • Dates: June 5 –  November 29, 2017
  • Interns for the Hawaii Open will be required to work a minimum of 10 hours per week.  As the tournament nears, hours will increase, and evenings and weekends will be required prior to and during the tournament.
  • Candidates must be able to work the entire duration of the tournament.

SKILLS & QUALIFICATIONS

  • Student must be pro-active and hard-working, detail-oriented with strong interpersonal skills.  Ability to work in a fast-paced, evolving environment, and demonstrate a high level of professionalism.
  • Strong organizational skills and computer experience with MS Excel, Outlook, Powerpoint, and Word.
  • Tennis background is a plus, but not required.
  • Open to undergraduate and graduate level students enrolled at an accredited college or university.
  • Student must receive academic credit to be eligible and will be required to submit documentation from the college or university.
  • No financial compensation is available.  Housing and transportation are the responsibility of the student.

RESPONSIBILITIES

Marketing & PR responsibilities:

Assist in the following areas:

  • Execution of Advertising Media Trades and distribution of tickets to trade partners
  • Updates to website, Facebook & Twitter
  • Creation and execution of e-newsletters
  • Distribution of collateral materials
  • Credential requests, i.e. media, partners

Special Events & Off-Court Entertainment responsibilities:

Assist in the following areas:

  • Preparations for all marketing-related events, both pre-event and during tournament week. Events include but are not limited to:
  • Pre-Tournament: Media Day (July), Volunteer Orientation (November)
  • Tournament: Kids Day, Military Appreciation Night, etc.
    • Preparation and execution of off-court entertainment, i.e. bands/musicians, player appearances and autograph sessions

Tournament Manager responsibilities:

Assist in the following areas:

  • Distribution of tournament uniforms
  • Player Services’ setup, i.e. , hair salon, staffing, practice courts, hitting pros
  • Acquiring tournament hotel partners
  • Securing partners to reduce tournament expenses, i.e. Transportation Services, Restaurants, etc.
  • Coordination of downtown shuttle to bring guests from/to downtown to the  Tennis Center
  • Preparation of post tournament report and intern manual
